Most people think group health insurance is only for large corporations with dozens of employees. In fact, one of the most overlooked market segments are “mom & pop shops” and small start-up companies with only 1 enrolled employee.

Here are the 5 kinds of companies eligible for BCBSIL group health insurance right now:

#1 Spouse-only Partnerships: A business consisting of only spouses may be eligible for group health insurance if the spouses are both owners of the business and file 1065 K1s.

#2 Non-Spouse Partnerships: A business consisting of two or more (non-married) owners may be eligible for group health insurance if the owners file either 1065 K1s of 1120S K1s.

#3 Family Companies: A business consisting of only relatives may be eligible for group health insurance if there is at least a single owner and a common-law employee*.

#4 Single Owner + W2 Utilizeee(s): A business consisting of a single owner along with at least 1 W2 common-law employee may be eligible for group health insurance.

#5 Single Owner + 1099 Utilizeee(s): A business consisting of a single owner along with at least 1 1099 common-law employee may be eligible for group health insurance

*Disclaimer: Rules vary from carrier to carrier so while this may apply to one carrier, it may not apply to another.

Ordinary-law employee: A full-time or part-time employee that is not an owner of the owner’s spouse.
